HOW THE FIGURE WORKS

Understand the counter.

What it measures

Debt held by the public includes Treasury securities held outside federal government accounts. Intragovernmental holdings are Treasury obligations held within government accounts. Combined, they make up total public debt outstanding.

Not a forecast

Debt is not guaranteed to rise every second; it can also decline between observations. This counter requests the latest Treasury record rather than using an unsourced clock animation.

What to compare

A dollar debt total alone is not a measure of affordability. Analysts also examine interest costs, budget deficits, inflation, GDP, and spending composition.
